Hi everyone,
I’m looking to publish some of my Masters findings and am looking for some journal ideas. My paper is looking at the regulation of firewood harvesting in rural Bushbuckridge (South Africa) and how these systems have changed (weakened) since national democracy in 1994. It specifically looks at the socio-economic and political drivers of this change. Does anyone know of an open access journal that may fit this idea?
Thanks in advance!
Sarah

Hi Sarah,
Interesting work! Because your works sounds interdisciplinary, the manuscript can go to a number of places depending on the framing that you are using. By the sounds of it Ecology & Society, Regional Environmental Change, Local Environment, Environmental Management, Journal of Environmental Management, Conservation Letters, could all be good choices. But these suggestions may be off base if you are taking, say, a political ecology approach.
There is a very good resource that I highly recommend for those who are writing an academic article for the first time (and for everyone else who wants to improve their writing): Belcher’s “Writing Your Journal Article in Twelve Weeks: A Guide to Academic Publishing Success”. I know it sounds like a self-help guide, but it really is great. There is an entire chapter dedicated to choosing an appropriate journal for your manuscript that you’ll find useful: http://www.amazon.ca/Writing-Journal-Article-Twelve-Weeks/dp/141295701X
Best of luck!
Marta
P.S. I have no relation with Belcher whatsoever!

Marta, thank you. Those are all such fantastic ideas! I really appreciate the time and the thought that went into your response. And I will most certainly source a copy of that book – it sounds exquisite! Every little bit helps, hey? 😉

Hi Sarah
Another journal idea which Marta didn’t mention in her pretty exhaustive list is the open access journal ‘Sustainability’. Here is a link: http://www.mdpi.com/journal/sustainability
Another option, if you’re using Common Property framing (or similar) might be the ‘International Journal of the Commons’: https://www.thecommonsjournal.org/
All the best for the publication process!

Hi Jess! Funnily enough, in between posting this request and your response, I came across both ‘Sustainability’ and the ‘Commons Journal’, and those have been two of my highest considerations. I’m leaning towards IJC at the moment, because I think it may be easier for me to frame this within their lens. Still in the throes of deciding on the journal, but I’ll let you know which one I decide on eventually! Thank you so much for your help!
